Prada Transformer - Rem Koolhaas
Rem Koolhas, like all other visionaries, tends to give his best when playing far from his homefield. When he does the homework (museums, skyscrapers, houses), he is not very convincing, restricted to the constrictive architectural dogmas, while on the other hand, there where the field is unexplored, virgin, he moves lika an avant-garde and makes no mistakes. Afterall, the best are always like that: they need their breathing space. In a crimpled and messy part of Seoul, he put up a building made out of cloth and steel pipes with 4 plans that are 4 facades. Four, not six, and each serves a function. Then come the cranes, they turn it around, and one of the sides becomes the floor and the other 3 become walls. One for the Prada fashion show, one for watching movies, one for art exhibits and one of fashion exhibits. Then, as if all of this weren't enough, every side is different: square, circle, hexagon and cross. There is no classical reference (in spite of the geometry) but only a shameless and even blatant ambition of raising the line. A contemporary space that goes beyond the worn out and obvious concept of flexibility that declines into cyclical, ephemeral, but into a formalization of the building that is almost pre-construction site. Of moving it, turning it, beyond its mere definition of "immobile".
